JAPANESE SURRENDER EPHEMERA
Good lot of six pieces ephemera related to the surrender of Japanese troops to U.S. forces in the Pacific Theater, includes: American propaganda leaflet, 2pp. 4to., featuring a photograph of smiling Japanese prisoners with food pails, and the message in English: 'The Bearer Has Ceased Resistance. Treat Him Well In Accordance With International Law. Take Him To The Nearest Commanding Officer', with an exhortation in Japanese encouraging surrender. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: pair of 4.25 x 2.5 in. leaflets bearing the phonetic pronunciations of orders to be used by American soldiers receiving the surrender of Japanese troops, including 'Surrender', 'Halt', 'Hands Up', etc. Interestingly, the verso of one leaflet bears the name and address of a Japanese citizen in Tokyo, with a message in kana. WITH: typed document, 1p. 4to., Sep. 2, 1945, [n.p.], a list of surrendered Japanese officers interned at Bilibid Prison in Manila, including generals Tomoyuki Yamashita and Akira Muto, admirals Denshichi Kochi and Kaoru Arima, and others. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: a printed 1p. announcement in phonetic Indonesian, dated Feb. 16, 1945, untranslated but mentioning 'General MacArthur' and the Philippines. WITH: an envelope bearing the printed address and return address of two businesses in Kobe, significance unknown. Six pieces.
