Description:

JAPANESE NAZI PARTY PRESENTATION BOWL
A sterling silver presentation bowl given by the NSDAP Landesgruppenleiter of Japan and the Far East to a loyal local Kreisleiter and informant. The hand-hammered Japanese-style sterling silver bowl is engraved within with a 40th birthday presentation beneath a Reichsadler with wreathed swastika: 'Meinem Kameraden HEINRICH LOY an Seinem 40 Geburstag Tokyo, den 24 Marz 1944' The inscription is followed by a large facsimile engraving of the signature of the gift-giver, Landesgruppenleiter Franz Joseph Spahn. The bottom of the bowl has three supporting feet and is hallmarked by Japanese silversmiths 'K. Uyeda' with a 950 purity stamp. Heavily tarnished, else very good to fine condition. FRANZ JOSEPH SPAHN was a high-level Nazi politician, the NSDAP Landesgruppenleiter of Japan and the Far East. He served in the war in France and early on in Russia, earning an Iron Cross 2nd and 1st Class, before getting wounded. He was an SS-Sturmbannfuehrer and on the staff of the RFSS, becoming a personal friend of Heinrich Himmler (book "Dunkle Seele, Feiges Maul!" by Niklas Frank). In 1943, Spahn travelled to Japan via U-boat on Hitler's orders, first to rehabilitate his predecessor Rudolf Hillman and then to become the Leader of the Nazi Party in Japan and the Entire Far East. He also had previously agitated anti-Semitic acts of Nazi Party members in Manila against local Jews and was active in the Nazi's Ausland Organization (AO) in both South Africa and the Philippines. The recipient of this gift was HEINRICH LOY, the local business representative for AGFA and the Kreisleiter of NSDAP Ortsgruppe Tokyo-Yokohama since 1935. Amongst his other activities, Loy would keep lists of German expatriates in his region of Japan who were reliable Germans, those of ambiguous political reliability, and German Jews. Despite his Nazi Party position, he was married to a Japanese woman. In May, 1946, four U.S. Army teams conducted three raids, and both Heinrich Loy and Fritz Spahn were arrested together with 24 other Germans and held at the Mampei Hotel in Karuizama. With the prisoners, $900,000 was captured - about $15 million today. Spahn was interrogated and sharply questioned about his knowledge of Gestapo activities by the police attache to the German embassy, Josef Meisinger. Interrogators' interview with Spahn may be viewed at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lb1vZ6eHMv8. Documents from N.S.D.A.P. overseas leaders and their offices is excessively rare.
