Description:

JAPANESE FLAG FROM THE 1945 SURRENDER OF SINGAPORE
A fine historic relic, a Japanese flag captured in Singapore and kept as a souvenir of the surrender ceremonies on Sep. 12, 1945 in which Lord LOUIS MOUNTBATTEN (1900-1979) accepted the capitulation of the city-state from five Japanese generals and two admirals. The two-sided 24.5 x 25.5 in. cotton Japanese national flag bears a red 'sun' sewn to the center and has cloth ties affixed to two reinforced tabs along the hoist. One of the tabs bears a period ink notation: 'SOUVENIR OF LORD LOUIS VISIT AND JAPANESE SURRENDER 1945'. Uniform toning and light soiling else very good. The flag is accompanied by four original photographs, each approx. 5 x 3.5 in., showing Mountbatten addressing the crowd from the steps of City Hall, the RAF and a contingent of nurses parading, and the arrival of a dignitary. Other ephemera with the lot includes a multi-language Japanese translation book, three Japanese manuscript receipts, a print, and a section of a Japanese newspaper. An important piece.
