Description:

JAPANESE FLAG AND DOCUMENTS CAPTURED AT IWO JIMA
An excellent group of Japanese Iwo Jima relics from a long-time military collector and WWII Navy veteran. Includes: a Japanese soldier's pay book, about 20pp. 16mo., filled-out, with period notation on back cover (in English): "Deceased as of Feb. 1945 - Iwo Jima"; two Japanese postcards, one with notation in the same hand: "Taken at Iwo Jima Feb. 25, 1945 (Looks as though he didn't get to finish writing his card)"; Japanese "meatball" flag, 41" x 35", with period tag reading: "Japanese battle flag. Not personal flag. Cpl. L.V. McCreary 5th Div. U.S.M.C. Iwo Jima 1945". The flag, with reinforced corners, bears much Japanese writing with one inscription believed to indicate that the original owner had been on Saipan and that there are prayers for him. Another notation mentions the occupation of Sasebo as well as wishes for a good trip to American and good relations between Japan and the U.S., indicating that the Marine must have had these inscription penned on the flag during the American occupation of Japan. A terrific lot from one of America's toughest-fought battles. February, 1945 saw the height of that battle.
