Description:

JAPANESE 2ND IMPERIAL GUARDS PHOTO ALBUM WITH MEDAL
Terrific post-June, 1943 photograph album from a member of the Japanese 2nd Imperial Guards Division, a machine gunner. The 15 x 10.5 in. brown faux leather album has a decorated cover and contains dozens of photographs. Subjects include portraits of officers and men, group photographs of the owner's machine gun unit, training in the field, barracks, inspection, camp facilities, a sumo match, parades, camouflage training, deployment, and a larger photo of Hirohito on horseback. Also present is an excessively rare silver[?] medal, 1.25 x 2 in., depicting a rider with a long lance standing beside his mount, marked '2nd Div.' Overall very good. The Imperial Japanese Army's 2nd Guards Division was renumbered from the Imperial Guards Division in June 1943, when the 1st Guards Division was activated. They were a quasi-independent elite branch of the Imperial Japanese Army. In Malaya and Singapore, the Guard Division was involved in several notorious Japanese war crimes such as the Parit Sulong Massacre and the Sook Ching massacre. Lt Gen. Takuma Nishimura, whose photo appears in the album, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a British military court in relation to the Sook Ching killings. He was later convicted of war crimes by an Australian Military Court in relation to the Parit Sulong massacre and was executed by hanging on June 11, 1951.
