Description:

JANE PIERCE
(1806 – 1863), Wife of President Franklin Pierce and First Lady of the United States from 1853 to 1857. Disliking politics, she was unhappy in the role, often unable to perform her duties, as she suffered from poor health as well as grief for the death in childhood of all three of their sons. Scarce A.L.S. 'J. M. Pierce' on monogrammed letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., Andover, [n.d.], to her niece Anne regarding personal matters. In part: '...I was much pleased to find that you had started on a journey...The morning we called at your house everything there looked very bright and ill say nothing of the nice newly painted house...Your uncle is now on the plan[?] proposed with Dr. Hemitch[?] and for a day or two I have not heard from him, but hope his health is improving, it needed it...he always depends extremely on change and variety...' Creased with scattered ink stains, else fine. Jane's dislike of politics created a fair amount of tension with her husband during his political ascent. Her composure was made worse with the death of her last son, Benjamin, who was killed in a train accident just weeks after Pierce was elected. Jane would spend the first two years as First Lady in seclusion at the White House and would reportedly write letters to her dead son.
