Description:

(1806 – 1863) Wife of President Franklin Pierce and First Lady of the United States from 1853 to 1857. Disliking politics, she was unhappy in the role, often unable to perform her duties, as she suffered from poor health as well as grief for the death in childhood of all three of their sons. Lengthy, good content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Concord, May 13, 1852, to her brother with melancholy sentiments regarding friends and family. In part: '...Among the multitude of my thoughts this winter and spring, you have not been absent...A long and tedious winter we have had indeed...but the grass and foliage are now in their first freshness...Sister Mary enclosed to me your letter my dear brother...it is a source of satisfaction to me...My husband has been most laboriously occupied for the last three months...he has had no quiet time at home for a great while...He is promising himself and me a little journey by and by...I am a poor affair, most of the time, but better some days than others. Benjamin has been pretty well...but has suffered from a cold withing a few days. He is asleep or could send love...' Lightly toned, else fine condition. The 'little journey' that Jane was promised would certainly come later that year in November when her husband was elected president. Benjamin, the Pierce's last surviving son, would be tragically killed in a train accident in 1853. Jane believed that it was result of God being displeased with her husband's political ambitions, and she spent most of her term as First Lady wrapped in melancholia.
