JAMES WILLIAM FORSYTH
(1835-1906) Union general who served under McClennan's staff during the Peninsular and Maryland campaigns, distinguishing himself at Chicakmauga, later Chief of Staff to Sheridan. In 1890, he was commander at Wounded Knee. Scarce A.L.S. signed twice, 2pp. 8vo., Fort Riley, KS, Nov. 29, 1893. He writes on letterhead of the 7th Cavalry to an unnamed correspondent in preparation for an upcoming trip, in part: "...I desire to inform you, as requested, that I expect to leave here for this place on the...train U.P.R.R. on Friday Dec. 1st and ought to reach Topeka at about 3...You may rest assured that James W. Forsyth is to be the only gentleman that will put in an appearance on the day and date noted...". Boldly signed and very good.
