JAMES WARREN (1726 – 1808) President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress and a Paymaster General of the Continental Army Fine content and association war-date D.S. 'J. Warren Spkr.', 2pp. 7.25 x 3.25 in., [Boston], May 6, 1776, a pay order issued by Warren as speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, signed on the verso by fifteen prominent members of the House. In part: 'Resolved there be paid…unto Nathaniel Bicknel the sum of one pound nine shillings & four pence in full for his expence...' Signed at the conclusion by Warren and endorsed on the verso by: JAMES OTIS, American lawyer, political activist, pamphleteer, and legislator in Boston, famous for his quote: 'Taxation without representation is tyranny'; WALTER SPOONER, a judge and army recruiter; CALEB CUSHING; BENJAMIN CHADBOURN, served in Sir William Pepperrell’s expedition against Louisbourg and a judge of the Court of Common Pleas; THOMAS CUSHING, represented the state in the First and Second Continental Congresses, but was voted out when he opposed independence; JEDEDIAH FOSTER, colonel in the American Revolution and prominent judge; JAMES PRESCOTT; JOSEPH PALMER, brigadier general of militia; ELDAD TAYLOR; JOHN WHETCOMB, fought at Ticonderoga and Bunker Hill, brigadier general in the Continental Army but refused a subsequent request by Washington that would have put him in command of all forces in Massachusetts; BENJAMIN LINCOLN, prominent major general in the Continental Army, SAMUEL HOLTEN, represented Massachusetts as a delegate to the Continental Congress and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives; JABEZ FISHER, member of the Governor's Council, the Provincial Congress, and the Committee of Safety; BENJAMIN WHITE, and MICHAEL FARLEY, a major-general of the militia after 1777.
