JAMES WADSWORTH
(1730 - 1817) Major general of Connecticut militia who defended the Connecticut coast against attacks by Benedict Arnold, later a Continental Congressman. A pair of deeds signed as Justice of the Peace for Durham, Conn. The first is a partly printed D.S. 1p., folio., Durham, May 9, 1775, an agreement between Col. ELIHU CHAUNCEY, and Lemuel Gurnsey. Boldly signed and countersigned by Chauncey to the left of a red wax seal; docketed on verso where Wadsworth signs again. The second is a D.S., 1p., folio, Durham, April 20, 1783, a payment for land between Lemuel Johnson and Bridgman Garnsey. Docketed and signed on verso by Wadsworth as Town Clerk of Durham. Light toning and minor foxing, else very good.
