Description:

(1817 - 1892) American politician, Commissioner of Indian Affairs and Governor of Kansas territory who restored order in the region, in his honor Denver, Co. was named. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., Aug. 30, 1861, to Brigadier Gen. Edwin V. Sumner. In part: ‘...Today I received from ‘Head Quarters of the Army Special Order No. 141' directing me to report to you in person, and appended thereto is the following: In accordance...with the War Department, General Denver is authorized to remain in Washington so long as he may deem necessary to superintend the forwarding of supplies for organizing an expedition on the Pacific Coast...Upon inquiry at the Ordnance office I have ascertained that there are no guns in California except two batteries of old smooth bore cannon and a quantity of old flint lock muskets altered to percussion locks...I will exert myself to have carbines, pistols and sabes forwarded at the earliest moment. The Department can furnish none of these at present...I doubt whether pistols can be had at all and therefore you had better advertise that each one of the cavalry should furnish his own and turn them in to the government at contract prices...Should we not have some long range cannon?...' Signed at the conclusion as brigadier general. Included is an extract of ‘Special Order 141', 1p. 4to., Washington, Aug. 24, 1861. Sold with the original holograph envelope. Very good.
