Description:

JAMES TISSOT
(1836 - 1902) French painter and engraver who traveled through Palestine to prepare for his 300 watercolors concerning the life of Jesus. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Paris, Apr. 10, 1897, a somewhat cryptic letter in French to an unidentified correspondent, in part: "...I have searched in vain, but I do not find any serious organization that does what you request...Let Mademoiselle X make an effort to find the lost address, retrace her steps and locate what she is looking for. Moreover, I am very busy at the moment. One would have to make inquiries, and I don't see how I could take the time. I hope, nevertheless, that you succeed in your search and that Joan of Arc, or the glory of France will triumph...". Unobtrusive mounting traces on blank last page, otherwise in very good condition. Tissot's long-time question was whether or not to immortalize the life of Joan of Arc on canvas.
