Description:

JAMES TAYLOR
(1769 - 1848) American brigadier general during the War of 1812 and pioneer Kentucky settler. He served as quartermaster-general of the Northwestern Army under Gen. William Hull, and was active in concerting a plan to displace Hull and give the command of the fortress at Detroit to Gen. Duncan McArthur. When Hull ordered him to act with Col. James Miller and the British officers in drawing up articles of capitulation, he refused to have any participation in the surrender and was soon taken prisoner by the British. He later became one of the largest land-owners in the west. Fine lot of four A.L.S.s, 9pp. total, legal folio, New Port, Ky. and Washington, to an army paymaster and Sec. of War Henry Dearborn, Oct. 9, 1808 to Sep. 20, 1811. Some excellent content including discussion of payments to be made to state militiamen, the construction of army barracks in New Port, vouchers and expenses, etc. Generally very good.
