Description:

JAMES S. SHERMAN
(1855-1912) Vice President of the U.S. under William H. Taft, died in office from kidney disease. IN PRAISE OF GRANT Fine content T.L.S. as vice president, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Apr. 17, 1912, to ‘J. E. Boos' in Albany. In part: ‘…I am in receipt of your letter of recent date, wherein you tell me that it has been the custom of the boys in your organization to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Gen. Grant with an entertainment consisting of musical numbers, a talk by a prominent veteran, and a word of greeting from some public man…I am glad, indeed, to comply with your request, though it is no easy task to do any kind of justice to the achievements and merit of Gen. Grant, either in few or many words. Both in military and civil life, as General and as President, Grant evidenced possession of attributes of a high character. He was diligent. To do what he had to do, he devoted his best efforts. In war, his purpose was not to kill, but to accomplish. He was implacable to a foe to his accomplishment, yet as a victor, he was lenient, considerate, magnanimous. He shone in the civic sphere as on the military field. He was ever true to his word and faithful to his trust. Courage, constancy, persistence, magnanimity, faith, integrity, were his marked characteristics, characteristics worthy the emulation of every boy in this land…' Fine.
