In part: '...Upon my arrival in camp I addressed the command in a general order being opposed to much speaking to soldiers, in which I explained to them what I had effected through the energy and popularity of our governor and commander in chief. The troops were called out on dress parade...the air was filled with loud and deafening shouts for Gov. Reynolds...everyone yelling enthusiastically for a speech. I spoke briefly of their former conduct their devotion and good order...I can say that I have never seen such manifestations to a great cause nor such a self-sacrificing spirit for the common good in all my life...'
