Description:

JAMES PURDY
(1914-2009) Controversial American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and playwright. T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Brooklyn, NY, Oct. 23, 1979, to Andrea Brown. Purdy rails against the difficulties of getting published in America, and the literary world''s antagonism towards originality. In part: "...The most vicious and powerful forces in America militating against imaginative and distinguished writing are the New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Newsweek... One often feels that if New York could disappear there would be more hope for American writing, but the bacillus has spread everywhere, and the New York Times definition of what a good book is eats like leprosy, cancer, and incurable syphilis into literary opinion everywhere." Signed in pencil, with several corrections, also in pencil. Very good.
