Description:

JAMES NORTHCOTE
(1746-1831) English portrait painter who was highly successful as an artist, his works numbering about two thousand. Interesting A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but ca. 1825], to some gentlemen, in part: "...I have received both the pictures safe but not any prints from either of the Engravers. I think your title of the Young Noviate very proper or The Royal Noviate or Devoted Royalty or The Royal Nun. In so short a time I cannot hit on any better then [sic] your own...". The painting from which the engravings were being made was Northcote's famous work The Princess Bridget Plantagenet a Nun, contemplating on the death of her brothers Edward V and the Duke of York. Very good.
