Description:

JAMES MULLIGAN
(1830-1864) Union officer who raised the Irish Brigade, he was mortally wounded at Winchester and begged his men to "Lay me down and save the flag!". Rare and fine war-date A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, "Hd Qtrs New Creek Va.", Aug. 10, 1862 to General Kelley answering a complaint that he was recruiting men for the Irish Brigade in Pennsylvania. He writes, in most part: "...Some quartermaster in authority at Wheeling has complained to you that I have sent Capt. Gleason of the 'Irish Brigade', recruiting into Pennsylvania - The Enclosed letter [not present], I trust, General, will explain to your satisfaction my action... The original of this enclosure Capt. G. bore with him - If the men referred to therein want me. I want them and most earnestly does the Govt require them -- I am satisfied, if they enlist in the forces of their own state; more satisfied if they were to enlist among my Irish Illinoisans. I have simply labored in this matter, to use the regard they feel for me, for the good of the common cause; and by the pretence of the Capt to direct that sturdy material where it may serve with the most advantage - into the ranks of like blood and faith - The gentleman at Wheeling interfered with this plan...I would not be interfered with by a subordinate and, am duty bound I 'resisted pressure from the Wheeling flank'. I telegraphed the Capt to 'Go ahead. I will [?] it on with these birds' Hence the offence - If this is answerable[?] then I have mistaken my duty - not avoided it". Minor marginal tears, especially at bottom, else very good condition.
