JAMES MONROE'S EXPENSES VISITING NEW YORK
Interesting manuscript document, 1p. 4to., [New York, December, 1817] a list of payments made from June 18 - Dec. 15, 1817 relating to a visit to New York by President James Monroe. Headed "Corporation of City of New York in account with Th. R. Smith Com'e Chr'n Presidential C'e", the document lists about 20 payees, including $46 paid to "Peace officers". Verso docketed by Smith, who has been assessed with the expense. The Monroes were married in New York and spent a great deal of time there. Sold with nine other Corporation of the City of New York related documents, including expenses for paving about a water pump at Broadway and Leonard, the celebration of the British evacuation of New York, salaries for the mayor and councilmen, etc. Very good.
