Description:

(1751-1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the 'Father of the Constitution', he authored the Federalist Papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights. Scarce D.S. as president, 1p. sm. folio, Washington, Dec. 17, 1811, a ship's passport given to the whaling ship 'Russell' of New Bedford and her captain 'Joseph Allen', indicating the ship's weight as 301 tons and admitting their passage into the United States '...with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance seizure or molestation...' Two sailing-related vignettes grace the top of the document. Paper seal present at lower-left. Co-signed at bottom by Secretary of State ROBERT SMITH. Some non-intrusive tiny holes, else very good. While it is not mentioned in the document that the 'Russell' was a whaling ship, our research has definitively shown that a 301-ton whaling ship of the same name had departed from the port of New Bedford to the Pacific Ocean or South Seas on at least 15 voyages from 1805 until 1845, with many of her earlier trips being captained by one Joseph Allen. Sold with some research.
