Description:

(1751 - 1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the 'Father of the Constitution', he authored the Federalist Papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights. Very unusual manuscript D.S. 'James Madison' as Secretary of State, 9pp. legal folio, Washington, Apr. 1, 1802 being the '...original patents, and...certificates of the then Secretary of War' which Madison has '...thereupon endorsed, carefully examined and collated with authentic records in my office...' attesting to the rights of Lt. Henry Dawson and Capt. Robert Beale each of whom had served three years on the Virginia Line during the Revolution and were therefore entitled to a grant of land in Ohio. Madison boldly signs the first page which bears an official wax and paper seal with ribbon. Secretarially-signed by John Adams, James McHenry, and Timothy Pickering throughout. Some splits, with one line of text somewhat ink-eroded and reinforced on verso, marginal toning and wear, overall very good.

Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house.
