Description:

JAMES M. HAWES AND WILBURN H. KING
Pair of rare endorsements on the verso of a document, 1p. oblong 8vo., 'Camp near Marksville, La.', Jan. 24, 1864, a request that a 48 day furlough be granted to Pvt. William E. Stokes of the 18th Texas Infantry, signed at bottom by the company commander. On the verso, the document is first endorsed by Col. WILBURN H. KING (1839-1910), Colonel of the 18th Texas Infantry whose regiment trounced the federals at Mansfield, after which he commanded a brigade of Texas regiments. Appointed but not confirmed a brigadier general. King approves and forwards the request. Beneath this appears a signed endorsement of Brig. Gen. JAMES M. HAWES (1824-1889), cavalry commander of the Western Department. He fought at Shiloh, Milliken's Bend and Young's Point, then in Mobile and Vicksburg. Hawes grants the furlough in the name of Gen. Richard Taylor. Soiled and stained with folds, still quite good.
