JAMES LOGAN
(1674-1751) William Penn's secretary who later served in several offices including the provincial council and Mayor of Philadelphia (1722), where he allowed the first Catholic mass to be held. Later served as chief justice of Pennsylvania and Governor (1736-38). Fine association manuscript D.S. ‘James Logan', 1p. folio vellum, [Pennsylvania], Apr. 1, 1702, a land grant of acreage from Thomas Barrel to William Penn, who is named ‘True and Absolute Proprietary and Governor in the Chief of the Province of Pennsylvania…'. Signed bottom by Logan, as well as EDWARD SHIPPEN (1639-1712) Early Pennsylvania settler, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Philadelphia (1699) and the second Mayor of Philadelphia (1701-1703). His great-great-granddaughter was Peggy Shippen, wife of Benedict Arnold. Also signed by THOMAS STORY (1670?-1742), British Quaker convert and author, and a friend of Penn. He emigrated to America, holding positions in the Pennsylvania colony. Toning to edges, expected folds, otherwise very good condition.
