JAMES L KEMPER
(1823 - 1895) Confederate brigadier general who fought at First Bull Run, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he was severely wounded and captured during Pickett's charge. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Madison County, Aug 18, 1883. Kemper considers his liability in the ownership of stocks at the National Express and Transportation Company. In part ‘…You are wholly mistaken in supposing me to be an owner of stock of that company…I am in no way bound for its liabilities…Very soon after the late war, a meeting of ex-confederates was held in Richmond to get up that company… done by my war commander who knew me as a poor man with a large family and thought that they were thus doing a good thing for me' Kemper states that he sold the stock and should not be held liable for any debts held by the company. Signed at conclusion ‘Kemper' and twice in the text. Some uneven toning, else very good.
