JAMES K. POLK
(1795 - 1849) Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican-American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington.Fine association partly-printed D.S. "James K. Polk" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Feb. 14, 1848, the appointment of Israel Vogdes to serve as "Captain in the First Regiment of Artillery". Boldly signed in black ink at bottom and co-signed by Secretary of War WILLIAM L. MARCY. Mounted, some light soiling in the engrossed area, else very good. Matted. ISRAEL VOGDES (1816-1873) became a Union brigadier general and commanded the defenses of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and also served in Florida. He was also involved in the first outbreak of shooting in the war at Pensacola in January, 1861 when Lt. Adam Slemmer took Fort Pickens and held it against Confederate forces (months before Fort Sumter!).
