Description:

(1817-1864) Confederate brigadier general who served with distinction at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville but was captured at Gettysburg becoming the first general officer P.O.W. from Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Was eventually exchanged and resumed command but died due to poor health following the Battle of Peebles Farm. Fine A.L.S. as a Captain in the U.S. Army, 3pp. 4to., Baltimore, March 22, 1855, to President Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) recommending a young man for a commission in the army. In part: '...have to call to your attention the application of Mr. John H. Stump of Maryland for a Lieutenancy in the U.S Army...[he is] in every way fit for the appointment...in the time of the Revolutionary War several of Mr. Stump's ancestors were in action and influential in the cause...The service of such men who risked their lives and fortunes in that dark period of their country's trial are greater than those of the mere soldier of later times, and entitled their descendants to at least an equal share of favorable consideration. The four nearest male relations so of Mr. Stump served with honor in the Mexican War...' Very good.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
