JAMES HAMILTON Scarce war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Bush Hill, Oct. 25, 1779, to Edward Shippen (who had preceded Hamilton as mayor of Philadelphia). Hamilton advises Shippen that he is delivering his taxes due for the prior year, amounting to 170 pounds. He thanks Shippen and a Mr. Bauseman for their "endeavors to prevent any further waste of my timber" and asks that suits be pursued against trespassers. He describes the era as "times of affliction...I will hope for the best...", with docket and notes on integral address leaf, possibly by Shippen. Seal tear causes marginal loss at left, splits repaired with archival tape on verso, boldly penned and overall good condition. Hamilton was all but ruined by the Revolution, but got back on his feet a few years thereafter.
