JAMES H. LANE
(1833 – 1907) Confederate brigadier general and the first Commandant of Virginia Tech, considered to be the father of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Commanded the 28th NC Infantry in the Seven Days and took over Hill's brigade following the death of Branch at Antietam. At Gettysburg, Lane assumed command of Pender's division following that officer's mortal wounding and returned to lead his brigade during Pickett's Charge, during which he was wounded. Superb content A.L.S. on Alabama Polytechnic Institute letterhead, Auburn, June 10, 1892 to Gen. MARCUS J. WRIGHT, then preparing a the official records of the war. Lane first corrects some entries on draft of CSA staff officers sent to him: '...My ordnance officer was James A. Bryan...& is the person who recently had so much trouble in dispossessing the negroes of his landed property precipitating the presence...of State Troops...' He corrects additional entries : '...E. J. Hale, Sr., the captain's father...was the special object of Sherman's vengeance when his army occupied that old town. Mr. Hale's printing establishment & contents were burnt, also the cotton factory...his private residence was ransacked. Some of the Federal officers...hobnobbed over the wines stolen from the old gentleman's cellar...Everard W. Meade...surrendered with me at Appomattox Co. Ho. as my aid[e]...Meade is my brother-in-law...We are just on the eve of our Commencement and I am very busy...' Expertly inlaid, fine condition.
