Description:

JAMES H. LANE
(1833 – 1907) Confederate brigadier general and the first Commandant of Virginia Tech, considered to be the father of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Commanded the 28th NC Infantry in the Seven Days and took over Hill's brigade following the death of Branch at Antietam. At Gettysburg, Lane assumed command of Pender's division following that officer's mortal wounding and returned to lead his brigade during Pickett's Charge, during which he was wounded. Partial A.L.S. on Alabama Polytechnic Institute letterhead, [Auburn, June 10, 1892 to Gen. MARCUS J. WRIGHT, then preparing a the official records of the war]. The first two pages of the letter are lost, the last page offered here wherein Lane mentions family members, closing: '...We are just on the eve of our Commencement and I am very busy...' Expertly inlaid, fine condition, matted with a reproduction photo. It is a pity the first pages are lost as they bore excellent content concerning Sherman's men pillaging a friend's business. Copies of the first two pages are included.
