JAMES GANDON
(1743-1823) One of the leading architects to have worked in Ireland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries. His better known works include The Custom House, the Four Courts, King's Inn in Dublin and Emo Court in Co. Laois. Rare A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Dublin, Sept. 12, 1788, to painter Paul Sanby, in part: "...Where there is a will there is a Way. Says the Old Adage for notwithstanding, I am changing the Situation of part of the elements by Draining and Digging for Foundations and deeply as I am engaged in Emboweling the Earth, I cannot let slip any favourable occasion that offers to shake an old friend by the Hand and ask him how He does notwithstanding great Hurry of Business and pursuit after Riches & Fame. Of myself I can only Just Say from the Quantity of Water I discharge from my Works, that I go on swimmingly, and must refer you to Mr. Hamilton who has kindly undertaking to give you this for further particulars concerning I, and shall now enquire about You and Your better part...". In an unusual cryptic postscript, Gandon suddenly adds: "Wrote this after a few hours notice This 12th Sept 1766. A word to the Wise Do you ever see a certain person". Paul Sandby (1731-1809) was an English mapmaker turned landscape painter in watercolors, who, along with his older brother Thomas, became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Lightly toned, with original integral address leaf bearing remnants of red wax seal, very good.
