(1928 - 1998) Assassin of Martin Luther King whom he killed in Memphis in 1968. A.L.S. 'James', 3pp. 8vo., [Tennessee State Penitentiary, Nashville, TN], May 16, 1978, a love letter to his wife and courtroom artist Anna Sandhu Ray, who sketched Ray during his trial for a prison escape attempt and married Ray in prison in 1978. Ray writes: '...three weeks ago I dreamed I kissed you...if you will bring three of your sketches, I'll sign them...I felt your pulse today, you have a strong heart...I just saw your name flash on T.V. as artist in a federal suit. The painting did look exceptionally good, you are surpassing yourself...I wished I could have kissed you alone outside...told you how much I loved & needed you and all the other things you deserved to hear, things I don't believe I could tell you in here...' James adds: 'Note: you are going to have to stop asking me hypothetical questions in the visiting room or I'll start thinking I'm holding hands with Arzo Carson [director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation]…' Notably soiled, estimated accordingly.
