Description:

JAMES E.B. STUART
(1833 - 1864) Confederate major general of cavalry who circled McClellan's army twice, was late to the battle of Gettysburg, and in 1864 was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern. Good content, war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Cavalry Division, April 15, 1863, sent to Brigadier General John H. Winder. In part: ‘...I send down to you 2 Englishmen who were picked up in Warrenton; they have just come from Washington and profess to be Southern in their sympathies. For my part I am disposed to receive with distrust men of this character, unless coming strongly recommended. They had no papers from the Federal authorities. Their names are Stevens and Laying. I think it best to keep an eye on them...', signed as major general. At this time General Winder was in command of the Department of Henrico (where this letter was sent) and was serving as provost marshal of Richmond, earning the nickname ‘The Dictator of Richmond' for his brutal and some would say ‘corrupt' governance of the city. With trivial water spots and mailing folds, else very good.
