Description:

JAMES E. RAINS
(1833-1862) Confederate colonel who was appointed as brigadier general, but killed in action at the Battle of Stones River before being confirmed. Rare A.E.S. on an interesting partly-printed war-date D.S., 1p. legal folio., Cumberland Gap, Nov. 28, 1861, a discharge certificate for a Sgt. W. J. D. Spence of Company H, 11th Regiment Tennessee Volunteers, by reason of ‘...Organic disease of the Lungs…', likely tuberculosis. The document is signed by the soldier's commanding captain, a P. V. H. Weims, and by Spence himself at the conclusion, confirming that his salary has been paid. Rains executes his endorsement vertically overwriting the text at upper left in black ink, writing ‘Approved' and signing ‘James E. Rains', adding his contemporary rank ‘Col 11th Regt'. The document is slightly ragged at the right edge, shows original mailing folds, and is slightly toned at the edges and verso, otherwise in fine condition overall.
