Description:

JAMES E. JOUETT
(1826 – 1902) 'Fighting Jim Jouett of the American Navy', U.S. Navy admiral who fought in the Mexican–American War and the Civil War. In the Battle of Mobile Bay, his ship, the Metacomet, was lashed to Farragut's flagship Hartford as the ships entered the bay. Monitor Tecumseh was sunk, but the ships steamed on, inspired by Farragut's famous command: 'Damn the torpedoes! Four bells! Captain Drayton go ahead! Jouett full speed!' Metacomet was sent after two Confederate gunboats, and in a short chase Jouett riddled the Gaines and captured the Selma. Fine war-date signed carte de visite photograph, shows a youthful Jouett in a portrait, signed beneath in black ink and adding 'U.S.N.' He presents the photo on verso: 'Miss Frank Sep. 4th 1863' Back mark by C. W. Williamson, Brooklyn. Fine.
