Fine content and association A.L.S. as President ‘Jimmy Carter' 1p.4to., [n.p.], Oct. 5, 1991, to Hollywood's original power couple, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. In part: ‘…I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to your home, and look forward to an opportunity to continue our discussion. We've decided to go ahead with our Atlanta project, which I mentioned briefly. This will pull together almost all major domestic issues into one bold effort in a major city. Joanne, Rosalynn is looking forward to your being with her in November. We'd be delighted for both of you to come…'. Two weeks after this letter Carter would publicly announce the formation of The Atlanta Project (TAP), a community empowerment program to tackle inner-city social problems sponsored by The Carter Center. In his 1991 speech announcing TAP, Carter said, ‘The difficulty of creating and maintaining improvements in the inner cities has been demonstrated repeatedly. In many ways we are exploring uncharted territory, with no guarantee of success, but we will not permit the uncertainties and known difficulties to deter us'. Newman and Woodward were well-known for their philanthropy, lobbying for various liberal causes and speaking publicly on behalf of Democratic candidates. Carter appointed Newman to serve on a United Nations Conference on Nuclear Disarmament in 1978. A central fold with tape repair on verso at left edge, otherwise fine condition.
