Description:

JAMES E. CARTER
(b. 1924) Thirty-ninth President of the United States who engineered a break-through in Arab-Israeli relations. A rare Carter-signed item, the 1947 U.S. Naval Academy year book "Lucky Bag" signed by Carter in blue ink later in life beside his image. Carter is shown in a bust portrait on page 176 in the 11 1/2" x 14 1/4 volume, with his photo captioned in part: "…Studies never bothered Jimmy. In fact, the only times he opened his books were when his classmates desired help…Jimmy's many friends will remember him for his cheerful disposition…". Page has a vertical fold not affecting Carter's photo nor signature. Carter is probably shown elsewhere in the volume as well. Carter graduated 60th out of 820 midshipmen in the class of 1946 and was commissioned as an ensign. From 1946 to 1953, Carter and his new wife Rosalynn lived in Virginia, Hawaii, Connecticut, and California, as he served deployments in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Promoted to a LTJG, he completed qualification for command of a diesel-electric submarine. In late 1952, he was admitted to the fledgling nuclear submarine program led by then-Captain Hyman G. Rickover.
