Description:

JAMES E. B. ‘JEB' STUART
(1833 - 1864) Confederate major general of cavalry who circled McClellan's army twice, was late to the battle of Gettysburg, and in 1864 was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern. Very desirable, fine content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Fort Wise, Kansas Territory, Nov. 8, 1860, to ‘Asst. Adjt. Gen'l… Dept. of the West'. Stuart petitions for a reduction of punishment for a deserter, Pvt. Jonathan Harrington, in part: ‘...Pvt. H is now undergoing sentence for desertion, promulgated in proceedings of a Gen. ct. martial at Camp Floyd U[tah] T[erritory]… His conduct during the march from Utah to Fort Garland N.M. was so exemplary that the comm'd'g officer (Col. [Edward R.S.] Canby) suspended so much of his sentence as related to confinement until further orders. His conduct since arriving at this post has been particularly good and I am the more convinced of this being a case deserving the clemency of the Dept. commander by the high character given him by his late comp'y commander… who seconds very warmly this petition for remission of sentence…' He signs ‘J.E.B. Stuart' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘1st Lt. 1st Cav.' Shows original mailing folds with slight splits at the extreme edges, with very light toning to the edges, otherwise in fine condition.
