JAMES DE LANCEY
(1703-1760) Chief Justice, lieutenant governor, and acting colonial governor of New York who presided over the Peter Zenger trial for sedition. The case is considered a landmark case establishing freedom of the press in America. L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Dec. 12, 1753 to "Gentlemen of the Council of the General Assembly", writing, in part: "Having now given my Assent to such Bills as have been laid before me I shall put a period to this session the season of the year being so far advanced, that we must be in daily Expectation of very severe Weather. Gentleman of the General Assembly You must be sensible that you have not acted in complyance [sic] with his majesty's Royal Instructions. You will have an opportunity during this Recess to consult your constituents and I hope and your next Meeting, you will bring with you such Dispositions as will effectually promote the publick Service..."Usual folds, else fine condition.
