Description:

(1810 - 1863) Union brigadier general of Maryland volunteers and commander of Camp Chase, where he died during the war. Fine association A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Middletown, Virginia, July 2, 1862, to Secretary of State William H. Seward. In part: ‘...I feel bound to call on you for your good offices on behalf of one for whom you have already taken an interest and secured an appointment. I refer to Augustus Baron of Eickstedt whom you procured the position of aide to Gen. McClellan, and who was afterward obliged to duty on the Staff of Gen. Dix – his rank being that of captain...he made application to Gen. Dix to be transferred to my Staff, where he has been serving since as my principal aid. Captain Von Eickstedt is...an...accomplished soldier of large experience in one of the best organized and disciplined armies of Europe...I feel called upon to state, that of all the foreign officers...Captain Von Eickstedt is, in my judgement, the most thoroughly educated...his services have been of the greatest value...his present rank...is so much below his capacity...it was originally intended that he should hold the rank of Major, and was only prevented from obtaining it, on a senseless plea of etiquette, preferred by the Chief of Gen. Dix's Staff...that if Capt. Von Eickstedt should be appointed Major his grade would be equal to his own, which he declared was improper. I ask you will your influence with the President and Secretary of War, to obtain for Captain Von Eickstedt the rank of Major, to which he is eminently entitled...I must still urge the propriety of his appointment though it should involve his transfer to the staff of Major General...Everything is now quiet in the valley – no enemy being near, except a small force beyond the mountains...' Some light spotting throughout, else very good.
