JAMES C. RICE
(1828 - 1864) Union brigadier general, led the 44th New York at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, Rice and his regiment were sent to the defense of Little Round Top. Rice was mortally wounded at Spotsylvania Court House. As he lay dying he muttered the words '...turn me over that I may die with my face to the enemy.' Fine content war-date A.L.S. as Colonel commanding the 44th N.Y. Vols., 1p. 4to., Green Bank Ford, Va., June 3, 1863 (a month before Gettysburg) to JOHN T. SPRAGUE, Adjutant General, State of New York. In part: '...On the 24th April 1863 I recommended...2nd Lieut. Eugene G. Dunham to be 1st Lieut. with rank from April 16th...Kimberly promoted to Captain. No notice of the appointment has been received...' Folds, near fine. Double-matted with a copy photo and framed.
