JAMES C. RICE (1829 - 1864) Union brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he is credited with securing Little Round Top against a flanking movement, killed at Spotsylvania. Fine content war-date A.E.S. on the verso of petition by members of the 46th Pennsylvania Infantry, 7 3/4" x 23", [n.p.], addressed to Andrew G. Curtin, Governor of Pennsylvania. The men ask that Capt. Henry A. Laycock be considered for the post of major in consideration of his seniority. Signed at bottom by 14 officers, including Colonel J. WILLIAM HOFMANN (1824-1902) who commanded the regiment at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, where the regiment fired the first shots of the battle. On the verso, JAMES C. RICE (1829-1864) pens an A.E.S.: "Hd. Qrs. 2d Brig. Mar. 5/64 I have the utmost confidence in the judgment of Col. Hoffmann in the selection of his Field Officers, and hence I approve of this recommendation. J. C. Rice Brig. Genl. Comdg 2d Brig". Beneath is a second A.E.S., this of Brigadier Gen. LYSANDER CUTLER (1807-1866), who also approves the promotion. Very good.
