Description:

JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Fine content A.L.S. "James Buchanan", 1p. 8vo., Wheatland, Jan. 6, 1868 to his ex-personal secretary and political crony, Adam J. Glossbrenner. Revealing statements, in part: "…I am convinced you assign[?] the true reasons for not visiting me during the times of trouble. Your head, I had always believed, was in the right place: and I am as sincerely and ardently your friend as ever. The Democratic party were 'cowed' for some years. I was abused, but not defended as I should have been, and therefore remained silent. Their true course would have been to support the war for the union, but to condemn the violations of the Constitution whilst conducting it. But enough…". Fine. Glossbrenner and many other Democrats abandoned Buchanan and his appeasement policies upon the outbreak of the war. Buchanan's abandonment by his party is well-illustrated here, as are the Democrats' war-time battles with Lincoln over the suspension of habeus corpus, the matter of states rights, etc.
