Description:

JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states'' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. BUCHANAN ON THE PUBLISHING OF HIS PRESIDENTIAL MEMOIRS, THE FIRST SUCH EVER WRITTEN BY AN EX-PRESIDENT Fine content A.L.S. "James Buchanan", 2pp. 8vo., Wheatland, Aug. 5, 1865 to Pennsylvania politician and his ex-secretary, Adam J. Glossbrenner. In part: "...Messrs. Appleton of New York offered & undertook to print & publish the work at their own risk...they proceed so slowly in sending me the proofs that at their present speed it may be months before its publication...The type & printing are very good...James F. Shenk and his lady were her a few days ago...He desired to review the work..." Very good. In 1866 Buchanan''s memoir of his administration, the first time a president wrote a book on his term in office, was published. "The Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion" is an exercise in blame shifting for the secession crisis and the Civil War as Buchanan blamed everyone else.
