JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states'' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Important content A.L.S. "James Buchanan" as President, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 31, 1860, Buchanan''s personal retained copy of his letter to JOHN B. FLOYD (1806-1863) accepting the latter''s (forced) resignation in the wake of the "Abstracted Indian Bonds" scandal. In part: "…I have received & accepted your resignation as Secretary of War; I not wishing to impose upon you the task of performing its more routine duties which you have kindly offered, I have authorized the Postmaster General to administer the affairs of the Department…"Fine. The scandal implicated Floyd''s wife''s nephew who removed bonds from and Indian agency safe, a crooked contractor, and revealed Floyd had paid large drafts to government contractors before work was completed. As a result, Buchanan demanded his resignation. Floyd was indicted the next year but never tried. In the end, it was discovered that he personally never profited from the venture.

Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
