Description:

JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 16, 1860, the appointment of Elias B. Carling to serve as 'Second Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Artillery'. Nicely signed by Buchanan at conclusion, co-signed by his Secretary of War JOHN B. FLOYD (1806-1863). Floyd was at this time shipping huge quantities of arms to Southern states, and following the outbreak of war, he would serve the South as a brigadier general. A large area in the upper part of the document is toned, and the text is just a bit weak, otherwise very good, double-matted and set into a most attractive black, brown and gold wood frame. Carling would serve for the duration of the war, notably in the Peninsular Campaign, Malvern Hill, Nashville, the pursuit of Hood, and in expeditions against the Sioux. Postwar, he served in the West, and would die at the age of 38 at Fort Sanders, Wyoming.
