JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. A.L.S. as President, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Sept. 1, 1858, a draft letter addressed to the "Committee of Invitation" writing that he was "...honored by your invitation on behalf of 'the Directors of the Kentucky State Agricultural Society,' to attend their approaching fair at Louisville..." He then crosses out much of his explanation for his inability to attend citing "...the pressure of public business...". From the papers of John Adam Glossbrenner who served as Sergeant at Arms in the House from 1850 to 1860 and as Buchanan's private secretary from 1860 to 1861. Light folds and soiling, else fine condition.
