Description:

JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 20, 1859, ordering the Secretary of State to affix the Seal to his letter to the President of the Republic of New Grenada accrediting the new Minister to that state. Ink erosion affecting the start of the first letter in signature, else very good. New Granada was a centralist republic consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today's Ecuador, and Venezuela. It was created after the dissolution in 1830 of Gran Colombia. It was later abolished in 1858 when the Granadine Confederation was created.
