Description:

(1783-1848) U.S. Navy commodore who commanded the USS HORNET during the War of 1812, ratified the first treaty between China and the United States and commanded the USS COLUMBUS and USS VINCENNES during the first unsuccessful attempt to open Japan to American trade. A.L.S. "Ja. Biddle", 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], to family member Nicholas Biddle, identified on the integral cover as an engineer aboard the USS PRESIDENT. In full: "If Capt. Elliott should pay you any money for me I wish you would receive it and give it to brother William." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a pencil biographical inscription at lower right, some moderate foxing to the center panel, original mailing folds with some splits thereto, some repaired on the verso with archival tape, and areas of paper loss to the central panel and right edge where the original seal has been removed, still very good.
