JAMES ARMSTRONG(1794 - 1868) Union naval officer, a commodore who served during the Second Opium War. On Jan. 12, 1861, Armstrong surrendered the Pensacola Navy Yard to Confederate forces, for which he was later court-martialed. Some historians estimate that as many of 75% of his officers were pro-Secession. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., from aboard the USS Macedonia, Norfolk, Sept. 1, 1837 to Capt. John Crowninshield. Armstrong regrets the illness of his friend's son, adding: "...I am still lying within the waters of the Chesapeake...I am most heartily tired of this place...the expedition will certainly sail this fall. But I have my misgivings about it yet - I shall believe it when I see it go...I have a fine ship, officers & crew...". Very good.
