Description:

(1830-1864) Union officer who raised the Irish Brigade, he was mortally wounded at Winchester and begged his men to 'Lay me down and save the flag!'. Rare, fine content war-date A.L.S.. 1p. 4to., 'Hd. Qrts. New Creek Va', Nov. 25, 1862 to 'Capt. Adams' in Clarksburgh, Va., an angry letter concerning his promotion of brigadier general. In part: '...My. appt. is bogus - a kind thing upon the part of Genl. [Patrick] Kelly: but an unreal thing in all save labor. Without honor and without pay of course...It is an ambitious sham - a pretty thing for a militia man: - a gay and festive thing to get rid of: - a military hybrid...a delusion by Hardee, wherever you exchange the respectability of a Colonel for the dignity of a General and lose both in the swap. In a word, I'm an Acting Brigadier: so we'll waste no more words about it...' Pencil note at top easily erased, else very good to fine condition. Of course, Mulligan was correct - he was killed at Winchester on July 24, 1864, and would only become brigadier general by brevet on Feb. 20, 1865, backdated to a day before his death.
